Examination of Conscience is a spiritual exercise in which a person remembers and identifies their sins in order to recall them in confession. It is a prayerful self reflection done before the Sacrament of Reconciliation that determines how we may have sinned against God.
1. I am the Lord your God, you shall not have strange gods before me.
~Is God number one in my life?
~Do I put money or material items before God?
~Do I pray every day or do I neglect it sometimes?
2. You shall not take the Lord's name in vain.
~Have I ever "sworn to God?"
~Have I ever used God's name out of anger as a curse?
3. Keep holy the Sabbath.
~Do I go to mass every Sunday?
~Do I arrive late and/or leave mass early for no reason?
4. Honor your father and mother.
~Do I always respect my mom?
~Have I ever failed to obey my mom's rules?
~Do I listen to all my teachers?
~Have I ever disrespected those with authority over me?
5. You shall not kill.
~Have I ever harmed another person?
~Have I ever willingly been mean to someone?
~Have I ever been happy to see someone suffer?
~Do I ever verbally or emotionally hurt others?
6. You shall not commit adultery.
~Have I practiced the virtue of chastity?
~Have I ever dressed immodestly?
7. You shall not steal.
~Have I ever taken something that wasn't mine?
~Have I ever cheated someone?
8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
~Have I ever lied to someone?
~Do I gossip about others?
~Have I ever spread a rumor about someone?
9. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife.
~Have I ever been jealous of other people's relationships?
10. You shall not covet your neighbor's goods.
~Have I ever envied others due to their possessions?
~Do I compare myself to others unnecessarily?
